Riverviews: Volunteering
Anglian Waterways
Volunteering Scheme
We have been working with
Cambridgeshire ACRE for over 6 years
to develop and enable volunteering to
take place on Anglian Waterways and the
scheme has been a huge success.
We recognise that using volunteers has the potential
to provide a wide range of additional bene昀椀ts to
Waterways and the wider work of the EA including
enabling better engagement with local communities
and gaining local support to help deliver a sustainable
waterway in the future.
Cambridgeshire ACRE who are coordinating this work
on our behalf have done a brilliant job recruiting
new volunteers. We have over 25 regular volunteers
who are now supporting us on our waterways having
undergone a day’s training.
Our volunteers have been particularly busy at
unmanned locks on the River Great Ouse during peak
times to provide a warm welcome to boaters and
to take the opportunity to promote our waterways
to the general public who love to watch boats using
the locks. They have also supported our sta昀昀 at
Northampton Marina on the River Nene. A key
volunteer also helped to organise an education day
for primary school children at the Denver Complex.
We are also keen to encourage our volunteers to
support our stands at the various festivals we will be
attending over the spring and summer.
The volunteering scheme continues to grow year on
year and has become very popular with our boating
customers and the local communities that live along,
or near to, our navigable rivers.
On Tuesday 7th November Anglian
Waterways had the pleasure of
attending the annual end of season
‘thank you’ evening for our fantastic
Anglian Waterways volunteers. It
was an extremely rewarding evening
meeting and thanking so many people
who give up their own time throughout
the summer months to promote and
assist the Environment Agency by providing a brilliant service
to so many boaters on our navigable waterways.
One of our volunteers, who is a very good chef, even cooked a
delicious curry for everyone to enjoy which typically demonstrated
the great teamwork and friendship within the group.
Many of our volunteers are looking forward to getting out on our
sites again next year and enjoying the bene昀椀ts of being outdoors,
meeting and engaging with other colleagues and the wider
general public.
We especially want to thank Ian Bliss (EA) and Rachael Brown
(Cambs Acre) who do an excellent job managing our successful
volunteering scheme.

The Name Game
Our precious waterways are an important part of
our nation’s rich heritage and beauty. They give
enjoyment to countless people – not just to those who
navigate them but also those who walk along them,
sit by them, 昀椀sh on them, cycle beside them or simply
enjoy being near them.
