This special award is given in memory of tennis star Elena
Baltacha. This award recognises outstanding commitment to
sport in the face of adversity and shows the positive outcome
and the difference that sport can make to someone’s life.
Despite being diagnosed with a chronic liver condition as a teenager, Elena went on to win 11 single titles, with her best
Grand Slam finish coming in the third round of Wimbledon in 2002. She also reached the third stage of the Australian
Open in 2005 and 2010. Her highest singles world ranking was 49, which she reached in September 2010. In 2010, along
with her husband Nino, Bally set up the Elena Baltacha Academy of Tennis in Ipswich to give disadvantaged children a
chance to play tennis. The Elena Baltacha Academy of Tennis or EBAT as it came to be known provides very high quality
tennis programmes for both young girls and boys. The academy also works hard to ensure that the many barriers
that stop young children playing tennis are removed. Wherever possible, a wide range of support for players and their
families is provided if they are struggling to start in tennis or move up the performance pathway.
