FAQ’S
WILL I BE IN THE SAME CLASS
AS MY FRIENDS?
WESTBOURNE IS MUCH BIGGER
THAN PRIMARY SCHOOL, WHAT
IF I GET LOST?
You will very quickly get used to the various
buildings and you will find that staff and
other students are helpful if you are lost.
You will not be alone, as there will be over
220 other Year 7 students who will have the
same concerns and can therefore help
one another. Older students, prefects and
House Captains will be on hand to help you
find your way around during the first few
weeks.
THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE
AT WESTBOURNE AND I DON’T
KNOW ANYONE
There are lots of people in Year 7 who are in
the same situation. Lots of them have come
from small primary schools and they are
looking to make new friends at high school.
You will very quickly become friends with
others in your year and in your tutor group.
There is a wide range of extra-curricular
clubs and activities that you can join, where
you will have an opportunity to meet new
people. The library is somewhere you can
go at lunch times and members of your
form and House will also help you settle in.
NONE OF MY FRIENDS ARE
GOING TO WESTBOURNE
The greatest thing about high school is the
opportunity to meet a diverse range of new
people and make lots of friends. Everyone is
feeling the same as you, it is normal to feel
excited and a bit anxious at the same time.
If you are particularly worried, please ask
your parent to contact Ms Abbott on 01473
466174, who will be more than happy to
offer further help and advice.
Not necessarily. We want to ensure that
you are prepared for life after school,
where you will often find yourself in
situations where you aren’t with your close
friends. Classes are based on academic
ability and so you may not be with your
primary school friends for lessons. You will
find that you quickly make new friends
or even renew friendships with people
you knew from pre-school or sports clubs
that you used to attend when you were
younger. In lessons we believe that the
priority is learning, not socialising. There is
plenty of time for that during social time
and out of school.
The top two worries that Year 6 students
express are social concerns. Although
common, most children report that
they are no longer worried about these
after just one or two weeks at school. It
is important to learn to embrace new
experiences and opportunities, in order to
grow as an individual.
WHAT IF I FORGET MY PE KIT
OR MY EQUIPMENT OR LOSE MY
TIE?
Being a well-organised person will stop you
forgetting things and give you confidence.
It means you won’t need to rush about in
the morning and risk being late for school
or missing the bus. Pack your bag the
night before you go to school, especially
if you don’t have a separate school bag.
Get out your uniform and your shoes.
Check that you have all the equipment
you need for the next day, including a
reading book. Check whether you have PE
and remember your trainers and a water
bottle!
If you forget your tie then you can borrow
one from The Hub for the day. You can also
buy replacement ties in school.
If you forget other equipment, such as your
PE kit, then go and see your House Pastoral
Lead for help with contacting a parent.
