English Literature GCSE
What we aim to achieve
Our main aim is to equip you with the skills to
analyse, explore and respond confidently to any
given text. To enable you to achieve this you must
enjoy what you are learning and it is our job to
ensure that the curriculum offered at GCSE is
engaging and challenging for all.
Course outline
Throughout Years 10 and 11 you will focus on the
following texts:

A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens
Macbeth - William Shakespeare
An Inspector Calls – J B Priestley
Power & Conflict Poetry
A selection of unseen poems
Throughout the texts we will; explore and challenge
political viewpoints, consider diverse cultures and
historical contexts, discuss and challenge changing
themes and character perspectives and, above all,
create a love and enthusiasm for a range of texts
dating from the 1500s to the present day.
• Paper 1 Macbeth & A Christmas Carol
(40% 1hr 45 mins)
• Paper 2 An Inspector Calls, Power & Conflict
poetry & Unseen Poetry. (60% 2hrs -15mins)
What skills do I need
You will develop the following skills throughout this
course:
• To explore the literal and inferential meanings of
words and phrases in the context of the time they
were written
• You will read the texts critically; exploring the
characters and themes, supporting your ideas
with relevant quotes and references, gain an
understanding of the writer’s social and historical
context and make your own informed personal
response, which evaluates and analyses the
writer’s choices in the text
• You will compare and contrast texts studied
throughout the course
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by 100% linear exam at the
end of Year 11, consisting of two exams for English
Literature.
