What we aim to achieve
How will I be assessed?
Our main aim is to equip you with the skills to
analyse, explore and respond confidently to both
fiction and non-fiction texts, dating from the 19th
century to the present day. The course will provide
you with a rich diet of experiences and texts to
prepare you with the skills and knowledge required
to successfully finish this course.
• Paper 1: Explorations in Reading and Creative
Writing (50% of mark)
Reading questions based on an unseen passage
from a literature text and a descriptive or narrative
based writing task.
Course outline
The course is designed so that you will take a
skills-based approach to English Language. You will
read a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts
throughout the course and develop skills of analysis
and evaluation to respond to these texts. You will
learn how to write an effective fictional piece of
writing, along with a range of non-fiction texts
written for a specific audience and purpose.
• Paper 2: Writers’ Viewpoints and Perspectives
(50% of mark)
Reading questions based upon one unseen nonfiction and one unseen literary non-fiction text and
a piece of writing to express a viewpoint.
• Non-Exam Assessment: Spoken Language
You will be asked to deliver a presentation to an
audience and respond effectively to questioning
using Standard English.
What skills do I need
Through the study of some challenging GCSE texts,
you will develop your core reading, writing and
communication skills.
