Health & Social Care BTEC
What we aim to achieve
How will I be assessed?
Health and Social Care introduces you to a wide
variety of job roles working with people of all ages
and environments, including nursing, teaching,
early years support and social care. You will
follow a programme of study that will enable you
to progress to further courses, apprenticeships and
employment in these areas.
Component 3 is an exam based assessment.
Components 1 and 2 are controlled assessments
through coursework. These are mainly carried out in
lessons with home learning opportunities to develop
and improve their assignments. Strict deadlines will
be set to ensure a smooth and effective moderation
process.
The aim of the course is to provide you with:
• Essential knowledge of the health and social
care industry
• Transferrable skills useful for everyday life
• The opportunity to enhance your
skills for that next step in your career path
• The ability to become an independent and
creative learner
Course outline
• Component 1 - Human Lifespan Development
You will study how people grow and develop over
the course of their life, from infancy to old age.
This includes physical, intellectual, emotional and
social development and the different factors that
may affect them.
• Component 2 - Health and Social Care Services
and values
You will study and practically explore health and
social care services and how they meet the needs
of real service users. You will also develop skills in
applying care values.
• Component 3 - Health and Wellbeing
In this externally assessed component you
investigate the factors that can have a positive
or negative influence on a person’s health and
wellbeing. You will learn to interpret physiological
and lifestyle indicators and what they mean for
someone’s state of health. You will learn how to
use this information to design an appropriate
plan for improving someone’s health and
wellbeing, including short and long term targets.
About the Health and Social Care Sector
About 3 million people work in health or social care.
Health care roles include doctors, pharmacists,
nurses, midwives and health care assistants,
while social care roles include care assistants,
occupational therapists, counsellors and
administrative roles. Together they account for
nearly one in ten of all paid jobs in the UK. Demand
for both health and social care is likely to rise so
they will continue to play a key role in our society,
and the demand for people to fill these vital jobs will
increase.
What skills do I need?
The majority of the assessment is coursework so
you must be motivated to meet deadlines and able
to work independently. It is important that you
have:
• A lively and enquiring mind
• A big interest in the health and social care
industry
• The ability to work under pressure
• The ability to communicate your ideas effectively
• Good time management skills
