Art, Craft & Design GCSE
What we aim to achieve
How will I be assessed?
Art, Craft and Design GCSE offers you the
opportunity to advance your skills in drawing and
experimenting with a wide variety of media and
materials. You will learn how to develop and refine
ideas leading to creative final pieces in response to
stimulating themes.
The combined marks from both units determines
the grade that will be awarded. Through written and
verbal feedback and regular marking of work, you
will be aware of what you have achieved and how
you can develop further and improve your grade.
What skills do I need?
Course outline
The course has two units:
• Unit 1 - Personal Portfolio (Coursework) = 60%
A personal portfolio will be constructed through
students creating diverse artwork in sketchbooks
and on larger scale surfaces, based on different
project themes. You will research the themes
independently and record imagery through drawing
and taking appropriate photographs. You will explore
different techniques and processes and create final
pieces that include sculpture, mixed media, painting,
drawing and printing.
There is an expectation that all work will be
annotated and that you will develop your skills
in writing personal comments, using technical
specialist language about your own work, and that of
a range of artists, designers and cultures.
A good level of drawing skill is essential, combined
with a passion to be creative and experimental. Art
can be time consuming. You should choose art if you
are determined to succeed and work hard in lessons
as well as at home. You will need to be independent
and use your initiative.
There will be an expectation that you purchase an
initial art pack of basic materials, which will include
the sketchbooks for unit 1 coursework, this will be
approximately £20. You will be required to purchase
an additional sketchbook for unit 2, the size will be
determined in Year 11.
Due to the nature of the course, and the necessity
that you use a wide variety of resources, there may
be times during the course where you may have to
buy specialist resources if your chosen direction
requires you to do so.
• Unit 2 - Externally Set Assignment (Exam) = 40%
You will consolidate what you have learnt and create
a smaller but significant project. There will be an
expectation that you become even more independent
as you create work in response to a theme that you
have chosen from a variety of externally set starting
points. The conclusion of this unit will consist of ten
hours of supervised time to produce a final piece
under exam conditions.
