Tackling Inequalities Fund
INFO
Shortly after restrictions on exercising and guidelines around social distancing were introduced in late
March, Sport England conducted regular surveys to establish the impact of the pandemic on physical activity
levels across the country. It quickly become clear that certain groups of people were being disproportionately
affected which is why Sport England created the Tackling Inequalities Fund. In the last year we worked
to distribute these funds to organisations in Suffolk who work with those living with disability, long term
conditions, from areas of deprivation or who are from a black, Asian or minority ethnic group.

over £3,000

Inequalities
funding which
has already allowed us to
support 339 young people from
four schools in Lowestoft to
access food and physical activity
sessions during the school
holidays, with one more session
due to run.
We have encouraged attendees to
continue their engagement with
the Suffolk Positive Futures project
and physical activity by attending
our community sessions that run in
both North and South Lowestoft.
This has ensured the positive
relationships staff have built with
young people continues to grow,
young people are offered continued
free access to physical activity
opportunities, and they continue to
have opportunities to socialise with
their peers.
£14,806 has
now been
distributed
to five
organisations
in Babergh
& Mid Suffolk, £22,178 to six
organisations in West Suffolk,
£86,106 to 23 organisations in
Ipswich and £23,949 to seven
organisations in East Suffolk.
The Sport England Tackling
Inequalities Fund has helped
us to support our clients to
get active again. The funding
allowed us to design and deliver
a new set of activities, train
new volunteers and purchase
additional equipment to ensure
sessions were covid safe.
All in all, this has been a package
that has helped us overcome
some of the initial obstacles
caused by lockdown, right
through to being able to support
our clients as we did before the
pandemic.

At
P.H.O.E.B.E
we support
women,
girls, and
their
families from ethnically
diverse backgrounds. We
secured just over £4,000
which allowed us to deliver
football sessions for the
families we work with, whilst
also upskilling volunteers to
coach sessions beyond the
funded period.
Many of the mothers we
support were really struggling
during the pandemic. Every day
was a struggle, however with
this funding we were able to
offer them the opportunity to
bring their families together, to
play football, be active and get
out of the house. It has allowed
local families to connect and
form a bond during these times
which has given them a greater
appreciation of sport and
physical activity.
