This Girl Can Suffolk
This Girl Can is a Sport England campaign funded by the National Lottery. The campaign which first launched
in 2015 works to inspire and empower women to participate in sport and physical activity, regardless of their
shape, size, or ability. Since 2017, Active Suffolk have been the driver of the campaign locally.

What else happened this year
We delivered our This Girl Can Pilot
Project with East Bergholt Primary
School who identified a group of year 5 and
‘‘
6 girls who lacked confidence in PE. Through
working with the girls, we established
activities they were interested in and recruited
instructors to deliver 6-week tennis and
badminton sessions. The girls reported to enjoy
the sessions, didn’t feel judgement, learnt new
skills, and 93% agreed that they were more
confident to take part in other sports sessions.
We collaborated with East Suffolk Council to offer three local
women the chance to take part in the first Felixstowe Triathlon.
Damilola had only started cycling two months before taking part in
the Triathlon but the experience has since inspired her to take up
adult swimming lessons!
Emma had slowly returned to physical activity following emergency
surgery to have her entire colon, part of her small intestine and
rectum removed. This was her first team Triathlon event.
Louise had never completed an event before and loved the way it
connected her with other local women – She has since plucked up
the courage to join a local running club!
All three women have stayed in touch and plan to sign up to the
event again this year!

Other girls should give
it a go - Ididn’t think I
would enjoy it as much
as I did!
I feel more confident,
the sessions were fun
and I think other schools
should offer these
sessions
