Social Sciences
We offer a wide range of study for our students which includes Business Studies, Health and Social Care, Child
Development and Sociology. These key option subjects will all link wonderfully together and into practical and
academic future employment pathways, in many different and varied careers. Social Sciences is open to all ability
students and with a good mixture of coursework and exam based learning throughout these four subject areas, our
students are able to develop and sculpture their own personal qualities and master skills new to them. Key aspects
such as building communication confidence, class room debates, presentation opportunities and working in teams
develops many different qualities for learning beyond the classroom.
We are also pleased to be able to build in a good range of practical application throughout our studies. This varies
widely and can be anything from promoting and developing an exciting school based business idea, a questions and
answers session with a community Midwife, a family child case study, planning and cooking a meal for people with
specific needs or an opportunity to achieve a First Aid certificate. In addition, there are many more classroom based
practical opportunities all of which encourages and cements high levels of self-confidence and gives our students the
best opportunity to put their developing and mastered knowledge into practice.
Music
Music is taught throughout Key
Stage 3 in the well-resourced
specialist room. There are also
three practice rooms for specialist
instrumental teaching and a
large hall and atrium housing
the Schiedmayer grand piano.
These new spaces offer a wealth
of possibilities for the future and
we look forward to using them
for concerts and whole school
productions in the future. Every
child has the opportunity to
learn to play the keyboard and to
use music technology to create
and compose music. Pupils can
also take instrumental lessons,
provided by visiting specialist
teachers. We offer lessons on piano, guitar, bass guitar, drum kit, cornet, trumpet, trombone, horn, saxophone,
clarinet and flute. We regularly enter pupils for external music performance exams.
At Key Stage 4 pupils can take BTEC Music. This is a practical course in focussing on music industry skills and practical
composition, live sound and performance. BTEC students produce, promote and perform in regular BTEC concerts
and events. Year 11 music pupils will rehearse and mentor younger students as part of their contribution to the
department’s work
