Mathematics
Children’s chances of success are maximised if they develop deep and lasting understanding of mathematical
procedures and concepts. At Stowmarket High School we follow a five-year programme of study that is built upon
principles of structured development and retrieval exercises that are promoted by the National Centre of the
Excellent Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). Our teaching of maths means pupils acquire a deep, long-term, secure
and adaptable understanding of the subject. At Stowmarket High School we aim to get students to acquire a solid
enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material.
With a track record of achieving excellent results particularly for those gifted in maths, study is supported with great
trips to places like Bletchley Park and Thorpe Park.
Students are taught in groups of set ability, in order to match the mastery skills required to the students, by a
specialist Mathematics teacher upwards of eight hours a fortnight. We also believe that students must practice skills
they are taught regularly and assessed with rigour in order to be prepared for the tiered, foundation or higher, AQA
GCSE paper.
English
English is arguably the most important subject at High School.
Like Maths it underpins many other subject areas and success
in English is crucial to a student’s progress overall.
We believe that confidence is key in English and we aim to
stress that English is a broad subject that means that students
can always shine in some aspect of their studies – whether
that is in speaking and listening activities, responding to
short stories, novels, plays and poetry, reacting to newspaper
articles, advertisements, persuasive leaflets, blogs and
biography or engaging in their own creative writing.
We aim to give our students the skills to be able to communicate well both orally and in writing and to be able to
respond perceptively to the myriad of texts they will encounter in the digital age. We are passionate about literature
and film and endeavour to inspire our students to a lifelong interest and enjoyment of narrative.
Geography
All students will have 3 lessons of Geography every two weeks taught by specialist staff in mixed ability groups.
Studying Geography gives you a better understanding of the world’s people, places and environment, how they
interact and how they change. We believe it’s a subject which directly address many of the key issues facing our world
from where we build our home to how we protect them from flooding and earthquakes. In years 7 and 8 you will
complete some fieldwork to investigate issues around our local area and in years 10 and 11 we take a look at coastal
erosion in Southwold and the challenges of living in a rural area in and around Flatford.
There are so many transferable skills including critical thinking, data analysis and observation that can prepare
you for your future and we hope that further down the line you can be one of the 265 000 who take the option of
studying it as a subject for your GCSE’s and continue making it popular choice for students at Stowmarket.
